Collaboration & Trust were the key ingredients in the creation of the concept for this one of a kind railing. We decided to use glass to extend the openness of the home and to preserve the magnificent view of the Kaneohe Bay and the Ko’olau Mountains.

To give the railing an artistic element I designed the Maile cascade which elegantly graces the railings at the appropriate points. Bronze handrail cap was used to accentuate the elegance of the railing and was treated with a darkening agent to bring out warm and subtle hues. It is than clear coated to prevent oxidation and discoloration. The structural members were treated with our exclusive copper/bronze faux process to blend with the shallows of the bay.

Kohala Coast, Big Island

Subject: Stainless Steel Cable Railing
Motif: Contemporary/Modern
Dimensions: 3’H x 260+ liner feet
Materials: 304/316 Stainless Steel
Special Features: • Urethane Finish
• Stanchion Terminal Cable finials
• 3/16 Stainless Steel Cable

Every project has its own unique challenges this one was no exception. Our approach: “Bring it on.”

The layout for all 260 linear feet was executed without the existing planter boxes or columns and all take offs were done off grid lines. It is worth the mention to demonstrate that L & M Metal Works can come in at any stage on any job and with the necessary collaboration perform to meet any circumstances.

The installation was a two stage process, first the posts and months later the horizontal double cap elements. Usually this is not significant however this was an outer Island site. This required specific anchoring mechanics to guarantee all post members were not only rigidly secured but also that all members were adjusted to exact specifications to allow for proper alignment of the cap at a later date.

By all appearances it looks to be a simplistic cable railing ready to be leaned upon by its new owner, and actually in the end that’s all that matters. Does it please the eye and does it meet or exceed structural specifications? At L & M Metal Works we can say with great confidence “YES” to both.

Kahala

Subject: Cable Railing
Dimensions: 3’ H x 50 linear feet
Materials: Stainless Steel with Bronze Handrail Cap
Special Features: • Hidden cable tension and fastener systems
• Sealed cable holes ( eliminates condensation within posts)
• Custom Patina Finish
• Bronze handrail cap including bronze darkener application and a clear coat finish
Design: Michael Martindell

Cable Railing offers this client an unimpeded view of the seascape at the rear of this home. The custom patina was applied to all structural members to produce a visual camouflage against the greens offered by the shoreline shallows. The horizontal cable has hidden tension mechanisms and the optical illusion as one looks out towards the horizon over the ocean make the cable and post virtually invisible, making cable railing the next best thing to glass for optimum view.
